Exclusive Interview with Rekesh Chauhan BEM: Unveiling the Magic of Midday Mantra

In anticipation of the upcoming Midday Mantra presented by Sampad in collaboration with B:Music, we had the pleasure of speaking with esteemed artist, Rekesh Chauhan BEM. Renowned as an award-winning British pianist and composer, Rekesh is set to deliver a captivating performance alongside Praveen Prathapan on flute and Alok Verma on live looping.

Q: Rekesh, what can the Midday Mantra audience expect from your performance?

This Midday Mantra is going to be truly special. We’ll be exploring a range of original classical compositions, delving into live looping with exciting rhythms from around the world. I’m thrilled to collaborate with the amazing Praveen Prathapan on flute and Alok Verma, whose live looping has taken the internet by storm. It’s a musical journey that spans genres, promising a unique and immersive experience for the audience.

Q: Who would enjoy your Midday Mantra?

There’s something for everyone in our set! Groovy improvisational compositions for jazz lovers, folk music for those nostalgic road trips, ancient Indian ragas for classical buffs – and, who knows, we might even sneak in a Bollywood classic! The diversity in our performance ensures that the Midday Mantra will resonate with a wide range of musical tastes.

Q: What has been your career highlight so far?

Receiving the British Empire Medal in The King’s Honours was a tremendous honor. I feel privileged to use my music to raise awareness for important causes and collaborate with various charities. Performing at some of my favorite venues, including the Symphony Hall, has also been a career highlight that I hold dear.

Q: Do you have a favorite piece of music to perform?

I love performing new music that I hear on the radio, adding my own twist to it. It keeps the performances fresh and allows me to bring my own creative touch to familiar tunes.

Q: Who are your inspirations in the world of music?

I draw inspiration from various genres. From the world of flamenco, Paco de Lucia; in jazz, Chick Corea; and songs by Shankar Mahadevan, with whom I recently had the fortune to share the stage.

Q: What do you enjoy doing outside of music?

Outside of music, I find joy in spending time cooking and experimenting with new recipes. I can whip up a good risotto, though I must admit it’s pot luck most of the time!

Q: You’ve been commended by the Prime Minister of the UK for your work with mental health. How do you believe music can support people facing mental health struggles?

Music, being a universal language, has a profound positive impact on people’s lives. It provides a platform for connection through shared passion and can open up conversations that are life-changing. I’ve used music as a medium to guide people towards crucial mental health support. It serves as a transformative mood-booster, positively affecting our mental well-being. I firmly believe that music should be considered one of your “5 a day” for overall well-being.

Q: Is there a fact about yourself that others might find surprising?

Surprisingly, my first instrument is actually the guitar!
