Empowering Voices through Dance: Sampad Supports Abandhana by Divya Ravi

We are delighted to announce Sampad South Asian Arts’ support for an exceptional project that delves into the profound and heart-wrenching voices of feminist resilience. Abandhana, choreographed and performed by Divya Ravi, is a solo dance immersion into the rich narratives of Therigāthā (Songs of Elder Buddhist Nuns), dating back to the 6th century BCE.

The title “Abandhana,” derived from Pāli, translates to “Unfettered,” reflecting the essence of this artistic exploration. Divya Ravi’s virtuosic Bharatanatyam movement vocabulary serves as a medium to draw parallels between the struggles, trauma, and choices of the Theri-s (elder Buddhist Nuns) and contemporary women. The performance transcends time, providing a poignant reflection on the enduring challenges faced by women across centuries.

Scheduled to premiere at The Place on February 6th, “Abandhana” is a unique artistic endeavor that incorporates live music featuring complex percussive structures, Tibetan soundscapes, and evocative pre-modern poetry. The choreography is ambitiously woven with these elements, creating a multi-sensory experience that resonates with the depth and complexity of the narratives explored.

Sampad is proud to contribute seed funding to support the realisation of this powerful project. By aligning with Divya Ravi’s artistic vision, we aim to facilitate the creation of an immersive and thought-provoking performance that transcends cultural and temporal boundaries.
