Funded by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund, Sampad’s Words of Peace project has been encouraging a new generation of young people in Birmingham to debate and discuss the themes of war and peace, whilst helping them to find out more about people and places associated with local pacifist movements.
Participants from schools in Birmingham have already produced their own modern day Pledges For Peace that have been installed on to a specially sculpted ‘Peace Tree’ which will tour to schools in the region.
Sampad is now looking for four volunteers to undertake research that will be used to inform school resources to be created as part of the project.
During Summer 2016 we are aiming to identify local stories and facts connected to the peace movement in Birmingham, using material from existing archives and newspapers to help to increase understanding of the project’s themes and to help to bring the subject matter to life.
Volunteers will receive professional research training relating to archives and will be given set topics to investigate. Volunteers will be expected to complete tasks such as:
- Locating relevant information from local archives/newspapers
- Identifying suitable images for use and obtaining copyright permission
- Suggesting stories for inclusion based on their research
- Finding figures and ‘bite-size facts’ to stimulate engagement
- Contacting relevant sources for further information
This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience within the archives and heritage sector. Please note that the volunteer placement is a flexible position with no fixed hours.
