Award-winning dancer-choreographer Sonia Sabri is internationally renowned for taking a fresh and individual approach to the Indian classical dance form of Kathak. In this sumptuous two-part programme, Sonia reveals two parallel aspects of Kathak, spanning from classical to contemporary and East to West.
Three fresh contemporary solos featuring choreography by the pioneering Shobana Jeyasingh and Lisa Torun take Kathak to new places, from the depths of the mind to funky city streets.
Sonia then returns to her classical Kathak roots: rhythmic footwork, rapid spins, and intricate gesture, in a vivid performance by turns intimate and exuberant. She is accompanied by a virtuoso live musical line-up of sitar, vocals and the world-renowned Ustad Sarvar Sabri on tabla. Together dancer and musicians playfully improvise with complex rhythms, building up to a heart pounding crescendo!
