Competitions
‘Inspired by Tagore’ International writing competition, in partnership with the British Council
In 2011, as part of its celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Rabindranath Tagore, sampad launched an international writing competition called Inspired by Tagore.
Tagore was a hugely influential South Asian poet and many sampad projects have celebrated his legacy or been sparked by a line of his poetry.
We were absolutely overwhelmed by the fantastic response to the competition: we had a huge number of entries – over 1400 from 37 countries!
Our partners in the competition, the British Council in India, held special events in three Indian cities in May 2012, to celebrate Tagore’s 150th birthday anniversary and to announce the 2 overall prize winners for the competition.

sampad is now proud and delighted to reveal the overall winners, along with a list of entries selected for publication in the special commemorative book which was also launched at the May events. Please note that details of how to purchase copies of the book will be posted on this page as soon as possible.

Hi this is great, all the effort to promote South Asian art and culture. Just one question about the Inspired by Tagore competition. Is this only for british citizens / people resident in Britain? If I have missed the information on the website, apologies.
Thanks,

Hi Kiran, thanks for getting in touch. Inspired by Tagore is an international competition - anyone can enter from anywhere in the world, but entries must be written in English. If you have any other queries just ask! All the best

I am very much eager to participate. However my question is- How are we expected to display our write-up as being influenced By Tagore?- is it through interpreting one of his works, or including a similar style of writing as Rabindranath Tagore? Further, what are the judges looking for in terms of content and expression- if only you could elaborate a bit...it would have helped me clear my doubts.
And is there any entry charge? Sorry, if i have missed that point in the intruction page.
Thanking You
Arpita Mitra
Anne Cockitt

Dear Arpita
There is no entry fee for the competition.
How you have been inspired or influenced by Tagore is entirely up to you. You must include a short statement about how Tagore inspired you on the competition entry form. It could be his style, expression, subject matter, his life. The judges will look for creative and original entries.

Arpita - your entry does not need to include extracts of Tagore's work , it can be an entirely original piece, but you will need to have a short introduction statement with your entry explaining in what way it was inspired by Tagore.
Arpita and Noopur - You can enter more than one poem or story if you wish, up to a maximum of 6 pieces of work

Dear Lorna,
1)Is the word limit(400)given for each piece of work?
2)Can I quote from Tagore's works in my works? If yes, then will the quotation has to be translated in English only or can it be quoted in Bengali too?
3)Do I have to provide an introductory note about Tagore's influence with each piece of work separately?Or one general note will do for all the works?
Please provide the answers as they will be really helpful.
Regards-

Anne Cockitt

Dear Purba De
The word limit is 400 words max for each piece of work. You can include a quote by Tagore but this will be included in your word limit. You can also include a quote in Bengali (with an English translation) but I can't promise that, if your work is selected for publication, the quote in Bengali will be included.
One short note about Tagore's influence on your work is fine for all your entries.
I hope this answers your queries and I wish you luck with your entries.

Arti - You can enter up to 6 pieces of writing, each one can be up to 400 words in length.

Do we only use his poetry as an inspiration or can we use his philosophical quotes and other material written by him too. Also, when we write how we are inspired by his writing - is that included in the word count, or is that just an introduction for the 400 words?
Thankyou!
best wishes to everyone taking part.

Dear Lorna ,
1)Can characters have tagorical names ?
2)If a line is mentioned as a foreword to the stories about how it has been influenced by tagore , will that do ?
3)Can you pls.confirm if i can use bengali terms when direct speech is used or do they need to be translated to english too ? Eg: "Maa" instead of "Mother" or "Choto pishi" instead of "aunt".
With regards,

Dear Lorna,
At the end of the form are given:
1)What is the title of your piece?
2)Please include a short statement to explain how your work has been inspired by the writings of Tagore
3)Please cut and paste / type / attach your submission here. Your entry should be a maximum of 400 words; there is no minimum.
So, do we need to paste the title of the piece below 1) and then the line to explain the influence of tagore below 2) and the rest of the piece below 3)? Do we need to mention the title and the line of explanation again with the piece below 3) ?

You can include up to 6 entries on the one form.
Priyam. Characters can have any names you like. Enquiry 2 - that should be fine. 3. You can use Bengali terms but you do need to include a translation into English. Your 2nd query- you can put the title of your piece above the actual work, but it does not really matter as long you include it somewhere.

I am a young student of class xi and an aspiring writer. I have been working hard on the competition ever since I first heard of it. however I would just like to clarify that I've sent a science fiction story and it includes a number of tiny pictures and dialogue boxes too, you see a science fiction story that too in 400 words would be difficult to understand without such factors, kindly relate.

Various replies to your enquiries: please refer to this paragraph below from the official entry form as this answers some of your enquiries!
Any writer from the age of 8 onwards, with an interest in South Asian Culture, can enter.
There are 2 categories: one for writers aged between 8 and 15, one for writers aged 16 and over. Please state your age on your entry form.
Entries can be poetry, short stories, reportage, and writers can submit up to 6 pieces of work, maximum length 400 words, using Tagore’s poetry and writing as a starting point.
Each piece must be given a title and must be in English.
Entries must not have been published or broadcast previously, and must be the original work of the author. Please note entries cannot be returned under any circumstances.
Ami: you only need to submit one statement to show how you have been inspired by Tagore, even if you submit up to 6 entries. You do not to include any of Tagore’s work in your entrees, just show how you have been inspired by him
Torsha: You will still be in the 8 – 15 years of age category for this competition.
Anwesha: Put the title of each piece above each piece. You can submit up to 6 entries and they can all be in different styles and can be poetry, a story, reportage etc.
Kumud: Entries should not have been previously published. We don’t accept translations of Tagore’s work; the entries you submit must be something you have created.
Sriza. It is a creative writing competition so it is up to you how/what you write but you need to show how Tagore’s work ( or Tagore the person) has inspired your entries.
Shamik. The rule is a maximum of 400 words for each entry.
Nicole. Your entries must be inspired somehow by Tagore and/ or his work, and you must explain this on the official entry form.
Shyamal: Sorry, translations of Tagore’s work are not allowed for this competition.
Saket. No images please as we will not be able to include images/drawings in the publication. I will look through your entries and I will email you if I have queries.
Bina: No translations, see above replies on this topic.
Suhotra: You can submit up to 6 entries on one entry form.
Anuradha. You can base your entry on what you like as long as you show how Tagore has inspired you. You can include a line or 2 from Tagore’s & state where these have been taken from, but note we are looking for original work!
Priyanka: You can use one entry from for up to 6 entries.

I have a few questions:
1. What does reportage mean, when you talk of reportage? Does a book review count? Essays-what exactly?
Aditi

2. Also, does the entry form have to be sent before or with it?
3. Does one have to register beforehand?
zeineb jaballah

i want to participate but would you help me to know more details lorna !!
Anne Cockitt
from Birmingham
5 Nov: Answers to more queries.
Farah. You can type or past in up to 6 entries on one form, lots of other entrants have done this, or you can send a form with each entry, it is up to you. Each entry needs a title – don’t worry that the form only refers to one title!
Aditi. Reportage – you can have your entry read like a newspaper or TV report, or even an interview, rather than poetry or a story. Essay style – okay but you’d need to make it interesting, same for a book review. This competition is for creative writing rather than reviews. Entries need to be submitted on or with the official entry form. There is no registration required.
Shyamal. You need to complete an official entry form and send it with your entry to the email address, as given on the form. You can download this from this website – the link is just above where these competition comments begin. We cannot accept entries pasted directly on to our website, sorry.
Zeineb. You can find all the details about the competition on this website, and the entry form, just above where all the competition comments start.

Dear Ma'am,
I'd be really obliged if you could clear the following doubts that have arisen:
1.Ma'am,could i submit a piece that is purely fictional and is is about a certain personal experience that the protagonist goes through, sprinkled with Tagore's works?
2.Also,if i have to submit 6 write-ups in one form, then how am i supposed to fill the blank for"The title of your piece is..."?
Aindrila

Dear Aditya
We have 2 entries from you - The Flower Lady and Settng Sail. I cannot confirm receipt of all entries although I try to confirm receipt of entries in the 8-15 category if time permits.
Arka: yes, you can include up to 6 entries on one form, just give them individual titles.
Ahaan; Yes, you can include a line or 2 from Tagore's work, just include a note of where it is from.
Aindrila: Your work can entirely fictional and does not have to be about Tagore, but you need to include a short statement of how he has inspired you. See my reply to Ahaan above. You can include up to 6 entries on the one form; see my reply to Arka above.

I have a query about what exactly does 'using Tagore’s poetry and writing as a starting point' implies. Is it something like that any line from Tagore's short story or poem (translated in English) has to be the starting line of my story ?
Thanks and regards.

Another thing I forgot to ask whether the introductory statement will be considered in the word-limit criteria.
Jagravi

Do all the creations need to be submitted in a single entry?
sampad
from Birmingham, UK
Answers to the questions above (from Paroma Bose and ARPITA):
Paroma: entries are coming in thick and fast and unfortunately we won't be able to acknowledge receipt of each entry. Anne will respond to you in due course if she can.
Arpita: A common statement across all pieces is fine. (You can send one for each of your pieces individually if you so wish but you are not obliged to). Please see my comment to Paroma above re acknowledging receipt of your entry. Finally, it's fine that your entry/entries does not contain an extract of Tagore's work - as long as you've explained how you have been inspired by his work, that's fine.
sampad
from Birmingham, UK
REPLIES TO Anindita, Peter Fredericks, Maureen Thomas Cherian and Ahnaf Rashik Hassan: please disregard the recent comment about the format of your entries which was posted in error. Just to clarify and confirm - whether you choose to submit one single entry or the maximum of 6 entries, they can be in any format you choose. (So if you're choosing to submit 6 entries then 6 poems or 6 short stories is fine or you could mix it up and have 4 short stories and 2 poems etc, it's up to you).
ARPITA
from vadodara, gujarat,INDIA.
THANKS AND YA I GOT CONFIRMATION FRON ANNE. THANKS A LOT.
sampad
from Birmingham, UK
Replies to: Ahnaf and Nehal - I'm afraid that you will have to count prepositions as part of your word count! We unfortunately cannot help you to edit your entries down or make exceptions to the rule of max 400 words per entry as it wouldn't be fair to the other people entering. Good luck!
sampad
from Birmingham, UK
Reply to Arashitaa: you are not obliged to start your poems with the lines from Tagore's poetry, you can start with your own starting line.
sampad
from Birmingham, UK
Reply to Supratim: You do not necessarily have to use a line from Tagore's short stories or poems as the starting line of your entry.
It is a creative writing competition so it is up to you how/what you write - it may be that you choose to reflect how Tagore's style, expression, subject matter or life has inspired you in some way, it's entirely up to you.
The judges will look for creative and original entries.
Your introductory statement explaining how your work has been inspired by the writings of Tagore will NOT be considered as part of the word limit criteria for your actual submission.
Vanya
I did read that that the word limit is strictly 400 words but my story is of 420 words, will it be considered because I truly believe editing it futher would be really difficult.Thanking you in advance.

sampad
from Birmingham, UK
Hi Vanya, I'm afraid that you will have to find a way of sticking to the 400 word limit - we cannot make exceptions as that wouldn't be fair to the other people entering the competition. I'm sure you can find a way if you look at it with fresh eyes! Good luck.
Anne Cockitt

I have read Tagore and found that his poetry has universal approach. In Gitanjali, he successfully tried to reach God in the way of love. i am glad to see we, writers and poets are invited to pay tributes to the great poet. And,here is opportunity for us to show our talent and skills.
Should we send attaching our poems in the form, or on another page.

In the 400 words maximum length, does it includes the Tittle and the name of writer because I wrote this poem entitled "On Whisper to Fancy Artsy Death" and the words in it is exactly 400 words excluding my name as a writer and the title. Could you please clarify it to me?

Is that okay or you will invalid my submission. Could you kindly please clarify it to me, I'm having my doubt about it?
sampad
from Birmingham, UK
REPLIES TO COMMENTS:
Arashitaa - due to the high volume of entries coming in, we do not have the capacity to confirm receipt of each individual entry.
Sharm - it's unlikely that only one poem will be published from each category, however it will be up to the judges to decide
Ameesha - as stated on the entry form the copyright of each piece remains with the author, however in this instance, authors of the winning works are obliged to grant sampad the right to publish or broadcast the works. Other uses of the pieces are subject to permission from sampad.
Mohammed Muzzammil - Please attach your poems within the entry form (see the last page of the form)
John Paul - the title of your piece and your name will not be counted as part of the 400 words so your entry should be fine

Hi Sampad Team,
Can I submit a play inspired by Tagore? It is however, longer than 400 words.
sampad
from Birmingham, UK
Hi Ramya - thank you for your enquiry. As we've tried to reiterate above, we cannot accept entries of more than 400 words. We're unable to make exceptions to this rule as that would not be fair to other entrants. Please see the entry form for further details. Thanks and best wishes, the sampad team
Vikas

Hi If I want my entries to be confirmed that they reached you, do I have to write something to that effect in the email itself?
Vikas
from Bangalore
Also, if I am submitting 5-6 entries on one form, how and where do I write the part where I have to say "how" I got inspired by Tagore? Do I have to write a sentence preceding each story of mine? Or send each story separately with entry forms and write there? And how long does the statement "How you got inspired by Tagore" have to be? Is it enough to write that you got inspired by this or that story?
peter fredericks
from UK
Should we include our name on the pieces, or are you judging anonymously?
Thanks
sampad
from Birmingham, UK
Hi Vikas - Due to the high volume of entries coming in, we unfortunately do not have the capacity to confirm receipt of each individual entry.
You are welcome to write a short statement preceding each of your stories if each of them was inspired by a different aspect of Tagore or his writing - but it's also fine to put one statement if it applies to all of your entries.
You are allowed to put your entries on one form as long as you make it clear that you've done that.
Finally, the entry form states 'Please include a short statement' so there is no fixed length for statement - up to a couple of sentences should be fine.
sampad
from Birmingham, UK
Hi Peter, yes, please do include your name and contact details on the entry form. The judging isn't anonymous.

Replies to comments:
Hi Shaarmila - Due to the high volume of entries coming in, we unfortunately do not have the capacity to confirm receipt of each individual entry.
Ipshita, diary entries/prose writing should be fine. As stated above entries can be poetry, short stories or reportage, and writers can submit up to 6 pieces of work, with a maximum word count of 400 words per piece, using Tagore’s poetry and writing as a starting point.

Hi Maha, yes you are welcome to submit up to 6 pieces of work (max 400 words per piece). The overall winners in each category will receive a financial prize and the judges will also select work by 'runners up' to l be published in a book later this year
Biki, your covering statement about how you've been inspired by Tagore's work will not be counted in the 400 word limit.

Will a certificate be given to the winners?
Puja
Please do try to send a basic acknowledgement if possible. If it is not, would it be at least possible to enlist the valid entries on a separate page on your website? Then we would know for sure whether our entries 1.have reached you, 2. meet the requirements and 3. are 'in the reckoning'. But all said and done, we do understand that all this is difficult with the huge load of entries. So good luck to your entire team!

I will be writing on various topics, and Tagore had influence in different ways. Since all entries are to be included in only 1 entry form, should the description on how Tagore influenced my work encompass all my works or should I have a separate description per entry?
sampad

From the sampad team - replies to comments:
Madhupriya, authors of winning entries will have their names published in the book, along with their work. We will not be issuing certificates.
Puja and Ipshita, as we have underlined in previous comments, due to the high volume of entries coming in, we unfortunately do not have the capacity to confirm receipt of each individual entry.
Vikas, please take the deadline to mean 5pm GMT on 31 January 2012 (so, 10.30pm in India)
Jake, you are welcome to write a short statement preceding each of your stories if each of them was inspired by a different aspect of Tagore or his writing - but it's also fine to put one statement if it applies to all of your entries.

1. Hi I've not put any title at all in the title category. I am a boy though. Please don't make entries invalid for that reason.
Vikas
from Bangalore
1. By title I mean Mr or Mrs. title, not the titles for the stories themselves. I have put those.
2. Can I make any changes and resubmit them?
3. Can you confirm reciept?
sampad
from Birmingham, UK
Hi Vikas, we will recognise that you're a boy and won't disqualify you for it! :-) No need to resubmit just for this. We unfortunately can't confirm receipt as we've had an overwhelming response to the competition! All the best.
Puja
When is the judging likely to be completed? When and where will the winners be announced?
Vikas
from Bangalore
My stories won't be made invalid because I didn't put 'Mr' or Mrs. right? I am a boy.
Vikas
from Bangalore
Hi sampad, I have resubmitted one story 'Giridhar'. The reason is not because of the title, but because I wanted to make some minor modifications. I have resubmitted 'Giridhar' story, which I had earlier submitted as part of 4 submissions. Afterwards, I submitted one more story, so in total I submitted 5. But please don't consider the 'Giridhar' I sent first, instead consider the one I resent. The others are as they are.
Vikas
from Bangalore
As they are means they can be judged as they are. But Giridhar has been sent again with some changes, so consider that instead of the first one. Please:)
sampad
from Birmingham, UK
Hi Vikas, don't worry your stories won't be made invalid because you didn't put 'Mr' or Mrs - and we will keep an eye open for your resubmitted/amended Giridhar story.
Puja, we will be updating this webpage with an update about the judging and timings of announcements very soon!
Vikas
from Bangalore
What I am trying to say is of the 4 stories I sent initially, one has modified and resent so the new should be judged not the old one. But the other 4 I sent can be judged as they are.
2. How many entries did you get in total?
Sarvesh Kulkarni
