Se Theen Trio - Three composition students from the Birmingham Conservatoire played music inspired by Africa and India with underlying Indian rhythms. Compositions were performed by Bland Mahdi on oud/guitar, Daniel Wilkins on African harp (kora)/guitar and Manveer Singh on tabla/dholak. Sarvar Sabri - This renowned tabla player performed a style known as Ajrara Gharana, a lesser-known school of tabla playing. Sarvar Sabri gave a talk about the features of this style and played a short solo with compositions from the Ajrara Gharana.

Internationally renowned violinist and composer Dr L Subramaniam played his first public concert in the UK for over five years. Subramaniam is not only one of India's foremost musicians and composers, but is equally recognised as a virtuoso performer of Western classical music and the foremost Indian composer of East/West orchestral composition. He has collaborated with a diverse range of artists and has created works for some of the world's greatest orchestras including the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Sikhi Nari Manch Choir all female choir. They translate devotional shabads into English and use modern musical instruments to reflect a fusion between East and West. His death in 1980 prompted an out-pouring of grief amongst Indians around the world. Over 25 years on, the CBSO and sampad are proud to pay tribute to this Bollywood legend whose golden voice lives on in the hearts of millions.

Big Dance Week
15th July to 23rd July 2006, two short dance film works on the Big Screen in Chamberlain Square in Birmingham.
The films, based on the theme of ecology, are modern interpretations of the classical South Asian forms of Bharatanatyam and Kathak.

An afternoon with two of the most interesting young writers in Britain. Roma Tearne was forced to flee Sri Lanka at the age of ten, but this dramatic start in life hasn't held her back. Her debut novel Mosquito was short-listed for the Costa First Novel Award, and her latest novel, Bone China, is described as an epic novel of love, loss and a family uprooted. Birmingham based Ahmar Malik was named Muslim Creative Writer of the Year 2007. All this rich experience is brought into his storytelling, which you can hear when he reads from his novel The Butterfly Hunter.

The World of Manveer Singh

Before becoming a professional musician Manveer trained as a surveyor but at the time of qualifying he was diagnosed with a rare degenerative eyesight disorder. Manveer discussed his career as a musician, the intensive musical study and his deteriorating eyesight. He also performed live with the various ensembles of musicians he has put together and led in recent years.

A fun and relaxed creative writing session designed to get your imagination and ideas jumping. Exploring the theme of journeys in familiar and unfamiliar territory, writers were taken through some creative writing exercises using the landscape in and around Cannon Hill Park as a starting point. There was an opportunity to record the writings as part of Amplifying the Map, an audio project to mark the reopening of mac.

The immortal melodies of the legendary SD and RD Burman brought to you by Shin Parwana the renowned front man of the bhangra band DCS. The musical director was Kiran Thakrar and vocals by Anu Shukla and Mukesh Patel. During this musical celebration the audience was taken back to a magical era of world class Bollywood sounds that the two musical geniuses, Sachin Dev Burman and Rahul Dev Burman, composed. Shin together with the Bollywood Pandits, Hina Chavda and Dancers, Subhash Viman and Jyoti Parwana produced a once in a lifetime journey of movement and sounds reminiscent of the golden age of bollywood.

Marva brings together six young musicians from North Indian, western classical, flamenco and jazz traditions. Working collaboratively, the group has combined traditional Indian ragas and time cycles with highly intricate rhythmic writing and explosive improvisations.
